Israel looks to aquaculture to solve food security issues

Noam Mozes, head of the Marine Aquaculture Division at the Israeli Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development, said aquaculture is one of the best answers to solving future food security issues, The Media Line reported.

Mozes said they have some research projects with the Jordanians, and are working with Aqaba, the only coastal city in Jordan.

He said they are also working in conjunction with researchers from Egypt, Morocco, and other countries in North Africa, and their relations with the Emirates and the Gulf nations have recently been active.

He said aquaculture in general, including the farming of algae, does not need fresh water or arable land. Per kg of protein produced, they use much less energy and emit much less CO2 into the atmosphere.

The world's population is predicted to increase to 9.8 billion people by 2050, placing a greater strain on food supplies and necessitating the development of much more sustainable farming practises.
