German minister calls upon federal states to participate in financing model for changing animal husbandry

At a recent conference, Germany's Federal Minister for Food and Agriculture, Julia Klöckner, has called upon the country's federal states to commit themselves to a financing model for the conversion of local animal husbandry.

During the current parliamentary term, Klöckner has developed an overall concept for transforming livestock farming in Germany towards greater animal welfare.

"I want German producers to have an economic perspective and do more for animal welfare, the minister said. "Consumers want this too. Higher animal welfare also means spending more money, which is why we have to support livestock farmers in rebuilding pens.

"To this end, I have submitted legally verified financing models. In addition, we have obtained a guarantee from the EU Commission that the investment for the construction of pens with improved animal welfare can be financed up to 80%.

"Furthermore, the financing period is no longer limited to seven years, but indefinitely, which fulfills another crucial prerequisite, as farmers need reliability and legal certainty. All the foundations have therefore been laid for a quick decision in the new parliamentary term."
