Ireland to resume beef exports to Egypt

Ireland would officially resume beef exports to Egypt for the first time in five years, due to concerns over Europe's mad cow disease crisis in the past.

Egypt banned imports of Irish beef in 2000 following the BSE crisis then, but has been easing its restrictions in recent years due to safety controls introduced in response to the crisis.

700 tonnes of Irish beef would be shipped to Egypt this week, marking the official resumption of trade.

In the late 1990s before the ban, Irish beef exports to Egypt were worth over EUR200 million yearly.
