Slight rise in chicken, egg prices in Negros Occidental, Philippines

The Provincial Veterinary Office (PVO) of Negros Occidental, the Philippines, has monitored a minor increase in the prices of chicken and eggs.

Price hikes are expected as the holiday season approaches, said PVO head Dr. Placeda Lemana, who noted the following price increases for eggs: small-sized by ₱0.25, medium-sized by ₱0.50, large-sized by ₱0.10 and extra-large-sized by ₱0.50.

PVO's market monitoring also showed that Victorias City currently offers the highest priced dressed chicken at ₱225 (US$3.95) per kilogramme, while the most affordable is in Murcia town, priced at ₱170 (US$2.99) per kilogramme.

Lemana emphasised that despite the minor price hike, the province has a sufficient supply of chicken, eggs and pork. The price of pork remains stable, ranging from ₱210 (US$3.69) to ₱300 (US$5.27) per kilogramme, according to PVO.

Last week, the Department of Agriculture (DA) reported that the daily egg supply remains stable at 36 million, though they noticed a minor price increase.

"While we anticipate a minor increase, our stable supply ensures that we don't expect a steep price rise for eggs," said DA assistant secretary Arnel de Mesa.

He added that the Philippines' commercial production of 36 million eggs per day sufficiently meets the demand.

"This aligns with the consumption of every Filipino, averaging about 160 eggs per year, or eight kilos of eggs per person annually. Thus, our level of production is commendable," he said.
