Humble rise in US swine numbers on September 1

The latest US swine inventory report have been released recently by the National Agricultural Statistics Service (NASS), the Agricultural Statistics Board and the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) on September 28.
Based on the report, as of September 1, 2023, a total of 74.3 million head were counted on US farms. This figure represents a slight increase over the same period last year and a 2% increase over what was recorded as of June 1, 2023.
Of the 74.3 million, 68.2 million were market hogs, while the remaining 6.08 million were breeding females.
Between June and August 2023, 34.2 million pigs were weaned, representing a slight increase over the same period of the previous year.
Between June and August 2023, an average of 11.61 piglets per litter were weaned.
US pig producers intend to have 2.93 million breeding sows in inventory between September and November 2023, and 2.91 million between December and February 2024.
In the meantime, Iowa hog producers had the largest inventory among US states at 24.4 million head. Minnesota had the second largest inventory at 8.70 million head, while North Carolina was third with 8.0 million head.
