Frozen fish a red hot item in UK market

The popularity of frozen fish in the UK shows no sign of slowing as sales continue to soar, according to the latest figures from TNS World Panel.

For the 52nd week ending September 6, the value of the retail frozen food market in the UK is now worth just over GBP5.1 billion.

But sales in the fish and seafood sector had grown by more than GBP140 million over the past three years, with the entire frozen market rising more than GBP700 million in the same period.

The British Frozen Food Federation said fish, potato products, vegetables, meat and poultry have all grown by more than 20 percent in that period.

Frozen fish is worth about GBP712 million a year on annual production of nearly 124,000 tonnes. The performance is seen as impressive during a recession that is deemed as the worst since World War II, prompting seafood companies to embark on expansion plans.

The no-waste aspect and competitive price of frozen fish is thought to be the two main factors driving up sales.
