Vietnam exported US$2.8 billion worth of marine products in the first eight months of this year
The Vietnam Association of Seafood Exporters and Producers (VASEP) said the country exported US$2.8 billion worth of marine products between January to August 2022, 33% higher compared to the same period last year, Fish Information & Services reported.
Currently, 37% of the value of the nation's total seafood exports are marine products. Exports of marine products saw a strong 80% increase in August of this year compared to the same month last year because of the impact of the Covid-19 pandemic, which forced processing companies to close or scale back their operations.
Vietnam exports the following product categories of marine products: other marine fish (accounts for 48%), tuna (26%), squid, octopus (17%), crabs, crabs, and other crustaceans (5%), bivalve molluscs (4%) and other molluscs. which accounts for the remainder.
With the exception of other mollusks, the export value of wild marine products rose in the first eight months of 2022. Exports of tuna saw the highest growth rate, up 55% to US$730 million.
Cephalopod and crustacean exports rose by 37% and 36%, respectively. Bivalve mollusk exports rose by 13%, while other marine fish exports rose by 23%. Only other mollusk exports fell by 20%, but this particular product only makes up a tiny portion.
Ho Chi Minh City, Khanh Hoa, Ba Ria-Vung Tau, Long An, and Kien Giang have the highest concentrations of processing and exporting wild marine products.
When compared to the same month last year, exports of other marine products increased significantly in August of this year. Only the export of bivalve molluscs decreased slightly by 2% compared to the same period last year, with the export value of crabs, squid, octopus, and marine fish increasing from 43% to 93%.
