Ukraine's meat import down 17% in Jan-Sep
Following the implementation of real customs cost, meat import to Ukraine dropped by 17% over first nine months of 2010 against the same period of 2009, according to the State Customs Service.
At the same time, a trend is observed toward an increase of meat export from Ukraine, by 57% against 2009, mainly due to a 2.5-fold increase of poultry meat export.
The State Customs Service notes that over the nine months of 2001, customs payments on meat products import amounted to UAH885 million (US$111 million).
Measures taken to curb meat import have helped the development of domestic meat industry and exports, the service says.
Meat import to Ukraine this year is expected at 310,000 tonnes, approximately 22% less against the volumes imported in 2009, according to a recent forecast by Agrarian Policy Minister Mykola Prysiazhniuk.
