UK-based Sirane develops eco-friendly salmon board packaging

Sirane, based in the United Kingdom, has developed a new eco-friendly salmon board packaging which is recyclable, compostable, and plastic-free, Fish Information & Services reported.

The new product is similar to the = conventional boards used in the industry by the millions weekly. The current boards however are made from a metallised polyester layer so it cannot be recycled or composted.

Sirane's Earthboard Salmon Board however is a water-resistant coated board uses more environmentally-friendly materials and works exactly the same.

Simon Balderson, managing director of Sirane, said the boards are an important part of packaging for salmon, fish and some cooked meats, but cannot be recycled. But Sirane has collaborated with a seafood company to develop an eco-friendly version of the same board with the same industry requirements.

Balderson said Sirane's Earthboard Salmon Board works the same as the commonly used gold / silver board, but Sirane's product is a sustainable packaging solution as it can be  recycled or industrially composted.

Sirane's offering is available in standard and custom sizes and in non-metallic colours. The product comes in random and registered print, with a standard thickness of 830 microns / 555gsm. Other thickness grades are available.

The boards can be used for freezing and thawing and has excellent moisture resistance.
