Germany allocates US$353.7 million for barn remodeling that supports animal welfare

Germany has set aside €300 million (US$353.7 million) for barn remodeling that will support better animal welfare.

The fund was secured by Federal Minister of Food and Agriculture Julia Klöckner and is part of Germany's economic stimulus package for 2020 and 2021. It will be distributed through a federal programme.

Sow farms in Germany can now apply for a subsidy for the implementation of the new requirements for sow keeping under the following conditions:

- The maximum limit is €500,000 (US$589,563) per farm and/or investment project;

- The construction project must not lead to an increase in the number of animals;

- The project must be completed by the end of 2021.

Individual farm consulting services are also eligible to receive funding for the preparation of a conversion or replacement construction concept.
