Algerian cattle buyers explore Irish market for thousands of cattle

A delegation of Algerian cattle buyers is currently on a mission in Ireland, actively seeking to secure a substantial number of cattle for export, as confirmed by Emerald Isle Beef Producers, Agriland reported.
This group, comprising three buyers, embarked on their two-day visit yesterday, with plans to tour six Irish farms today and conduct further inspections tomorrow.
The primary objective of these buyers is to acquire 6,000 finished continental bulls and bullocks, alongside an additional 6,000 continental weanlings, and 1,500 in-calf Friesian heifers for export to Algeria.
According to Eamon Corley, one of the founders of Emerald Isle Beef Producers, the buyers are also considering the export of cattle from Ireland to Algeria in carcass form, facilitated through a contract killing arrangement.
Sources suggest that these buyers have been procuring cattle from France over the past three years. Emerald Isle Beef Producers, known for its previous shipment of 1,300 cattle to Algeria, is actively seeking to establish a year-long arrangement with these buyers, complete with a price benchmark.
Corley said that while Ireland is a strong contender, other sourcing options are available to the buyers, including South America and other regions. However, should all factors align favourably, Ireland could potentially meet their cattle demand in its entirety.
He encouraged farmers possessing substantial quantities of suitable cattle to reach out to the producer organisation.
Emerald Isle Beef Producers, founded in 2019, stands as one of Ireland's pioneering beef producer organizations, representing hundreds of beef farmers from across the nation.
