Belarusian pork exporters eye China market

Belarusian companies are vying for permits to export pork to China, whose appetite for the staple has led to a surge in imports during the first half of the year.

"We very tightly work with Chinese partners. Food sales to China increased by 2.7 times in January-July to $134 million. It is not the limit. New enterprises are being certified. Dairy industry enterprises, enterprises that process poultry meat and beef have been vetted to export their products to China", said Belarusian Agriculture and Food Minister Ivan Krupko during the 30th international agriculture expo Belagro 2020 on Sept. 29, according to BelTA.

"Our pig farms and processing enterprises are being certified for exporting pork to China now", he added.

Russia, meanwhile, remains Belarus' key partner in agribusiness. Last year Belarus exported $5.5 billion worth of agricultural products, with Russia's share at $4.4 billion.

In the first seven months, Belarus' export of agricultural products and food totalled $3.2 billion, up 106.5% or $196.6 million. The export of meat and meat products rose by 14.8% to $572.3 million, as per report.

Krupko said their plans for the next five years include the modernisation of agricultural and processing enterprises to gain competitive edge on foreign markets.
