Bangladesh poultry sector urged to lower production costs, avoid egg imports
Bangladesh's Fisheries and Livestock Adviser, Farida Akhtar, has called on poultry businesses to focus on reducing production costs to make eggs and chicken more affordable for consumers, The Business Standard reported.
Speaking at a seminar, Akhtar emphasised the importance of avoiding egg imports, stating that importing eggs could introduce diseases from other countries, potentially harming the local poultry industry.
"We do not want to import eggs under any circumstances. Importing eggs could introduce diseases from other countries, which could potentially destroy our poultry industry," she said.
The seminar, titled Cost-effective and Sustainable Poultry Production, was organised by the Bangladesh chapter of the World's Poultry Science Association (WPSA-BB), and held at the Radisson Blu Hotel in Dhaka.
Akhtar also addressed the challenges the poultry industry has faced due to recent floods, which have caused a decrease in production. However, she urged businesses to explore ways to make eggs and chicken more affordable for the public.
In her speech, she highlighted the significant contribution of the poultry sector to Bangladesh's economy, alongside the ready-made garment industry and remittances from expatriates.
"The contribution of the poultry sector is equally important," she said, stressing that this sector plays a key role in meeting the country's daily protein needs.
Akhtar called for joint efforts from all stakeholders to help develop and expand the poultry industry, noting its contributions not only to economic development but also to social progress and job creation.
"The poultry industry also plays a crucial role in social development and job creation, while contributing significantly to the country's economic development," she added.
