Suppliers' quotes
Price quotes of US feed-grade whey stayed in the range of US$397-838/tonne.
Market analysis
Trade was light in the whey market as feed millers were not keen to stock high inventories of the product. With the cost of US whey imports staying soft and the domestic piglet population showing no signs of recovering, there was no urgency for hog feed producers to place orders for whey.
China's whey imports dropped 3.6% in August, totalling 45,100 tonnes while prices increased 7.2% to US$1,439/tonne.
Market forecast
With the sow inventories staying flat for consecutive 47 months, piglet number will remain at low levels this year. Sluggish whey demand will exert pressure on prices when the market resumes trading after the long holidays.
