South Korea gears up on potential beef exports to Canada
South Korea's "hanu" beef has received high marks in Canada, raising prospects for exports.
The Ministry for Food, Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries said Thursday (Oct 1) that hanu beef from Hoengseong County in Gangwon Province received higher points than top quality Canadian beef during a sampling event organised by the Canada Beef Export Federation.
Canada is currently making preparations to import hanu after South Korea urged Canada to recognise South Korea as a region free of foot-and-mouth disease.
South Korea said it will seek to export hanu to Canada separately from efforts to settle a dispute over Canada's formal complaint regarding South Korea's refusal to allow Canadian beef imports.
