Ukraine should limit wheat exports if it hopes to avoid imports

Ukraine has exported 1.1 million tonnes of wheat, including 75 percent of milling wheat, the analyst of APK-Inform, Natalya Shelest said.

The wheat crop of 13.9 million tonnes for 2006 would cover the internal needs of the country. However, this is pre-conditioned on the fact that export level would not exceed admissible levels totalling 3 million tonnes, Shelest said.

Ukraine may find itself having to import wheat at high prices if it does not keep a lid on its own exports, she said.

In 2005/06, Ukraine exported 6.43 million tonnes of wheat, almost a-third of a harvest totalling 18.7 million tonnes.
