US's Alaska Governor Eyes Asian Seafood Market

Governor of the U.S. province, Alaska, Frank Murkowski will embark on a drive to promote Alaska seafood in key Asian markets.

This upcoming trade mission will see the governor meeting with some of the region's top seafood companies to showcase Alaskan seafood among other products.

Taiwan, Hong Kong and Japan will make up the bulk of the trip, highlighting northern province's gradual recognition of Asia's booming markets.

"One of the things that a lot of people have overlooked is the dramatic growth in the Asian economy," Murkowski told reporters at a press conference announcing the mission. "The tremendous developments occurring over there necessitate the development of Alaska's exports in timber, minerals and fish products."

Japan is Alaska's top trading partner, with seafood exports reaching $278 million in the first six months of 2003. Seafood exports from Alaska to South Korea have shown promising growth, at 68 percent up through the first half of the year.

Among the seafood companies Murkowski and his team plan on meeting with are top Japanese seafood companies Mitsui, Mitsubishi, Nichiro, Kyokuyo Corporation, Nippon Suisan Kaisha, and the Daerim Corporation, one of Korea's largest seafood businesses.
