Vietnam's Fisheries Discussed At National Meeting

A National Meeting in Hanoi will highlight the prospects for developments in Vietnam's fisheries industry. The meeting, slated from Sept. 29-30, will be held by the Ministry of Fisheries and the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO).

The fishing sector has become on the backbones of Vietnam's economy, contributing more than 1.64 billion USD in the first nine months of this year. With an export value of more than 2 billion USD in 2002, the industry looks set to make 2.3 billion USD this year.

However, limited natural resources and the poor productivity and quality of aquaculture are hindrances to the development of the fisheries sector.

Participants at the meeting discussed ways to up awareness levels of the of the consequences of over-exploitation and risks to bio-diversity and environmental and socio-economic sustainability.
