Philippines reverses poultry import bans in South Dakota, Israel

Poultry import bans on Israel and South Dakota (United States) have been lifted by the Philippine Department of Agriculture following their containment of avian influenza or bird flu outbreaks.

The prohibition covered domestic and wild birds, poultry meat, day-old chicks, hatching eggs, and semen for artificial insemination.

The lifting was ordered in separate administrative memos issued by Agriculture Secretary Francisco Tiu Laurel Jr. — after Israel and South Dakota veterinary authorities reported to the World Organisation for Animal Health that there have been no new cases of highly pathogenic avian influenza (HPAI) in their respective jurisdictions since mid-July.

"These decisions are based on scientific evidence and international reporting standards to ensure both biosecurity and a stable supply of poultry products," said Tiu Laurel.

Import bans are precautionary measures to safeguard the country's livestock and poultry industries. These sectors are important foundations of Philippine agriculture that are vital in achieving food security, attracting investments, and providing rural employment, the DA said.

The agency reiterated its commitment to upholding biosecurity standards while ensuring that safe and affordable food is available for Filipino consumers.
