Rising demand and production of meat substitutes in Germany
Germany has seen increased demand and production in meat substitute products such as vegetarian spreads, soy patties or tofu.
In the first quarter of this year, the production of meat substitute products spiked by 37% from close to 14,700 tonnes to 20,000 tonnes compared to the same quarter of 2019.
The production value for meat substitute products rose by 36% in the same period from just under €62.4 million (US$72.6 million) to €85.1 million (US$99.1 million).
For most of 2019, the production value of meat substitute products reached €272.8 million (US$317.5 million). This sum is still relatively small compared to meat production. The total production value of the meat, poultry and processed meat categories in 2019 was €40.1 billion (US$46.8 billion).
