Northern Thailand confirms bird flu outbreak
Authorities have confirmed a H5N1 outbreak of bird flu in Phichit, a province in northern Thailand about 300 kilometres from the country's capital Bangkok.
Thawatpong Paekwamdee, chief of Taphan Hin district, said that test results of carcasses of chickens raised by a villager were found to have the H5N1 virus.
The province's Governor Preecha Ruengchan has called for an urgent meeting with livestock officials after domestic fowl were discovered dead.
Up to 90 chickens within 1-kilometre radius from the location have been culled.
Authorities are currently monitoring the situation and have prohibited the transportation of birds in the area.
