Asian Rust Found In 80% Of Brazil's Soybean Production Areas

Asian Soy Rust is present in 80% of Brazilian soybean-producing areas. This could prompt losses of more than five million metric tons in the 2004-05 harvest, according to specialists from Brazil's Agricultural Confederation.

Yield losses from Soybean Rust are likely to be the same or higher than 2003-04 losses, which reached 4.5 million tons of soy - 9 percent of the 49.8 million-ton harvest.

Authorities estimated that Soybean Rust cost Brazilian producers $2.2 billion in the 2003-04 harvest.

The disease is worst in Mato Grosso, Brazil's largest soybean-producing state.
