Sri Lanka farmers anticipate egg shortage in the country

Ajith Gunasekara, president of the All Ceylon Poultry Traders' Association, said the reduction in the import of hens needed for poultry farming may lead to a future egg shortage in Sri Lanka, News 1st reported.

He said that hens kept by farms are currently also sold for meat.

Mahinda Amaraweera, the Sri Lanka Minister of Agriculture, also said that only 10,000 instead of 80,000 hens were needed to be imported for the production of poultry.

The Minister expressed his lack of optimism for the poultry industry's future given the current situation.

He continued by saying that in order to keep the poultry industry afloat and sustain it without the use of imports, authorities are looking at short-term solutions, such as offering the required animal feed.
