Local government unit in Asturias, Cebu, Philippines, takes poultry farms to task for high number of flies

The local government unit (LGU) of Asturias, Cebu, the Philippines, has issued a warning against two poultry farms in the town due to the presence of an unusual number of flies in their facility.

Mayor Dana Andrew Dumdum has issued a "No Chick-in" warning for one cycle for two poultry farms after an inspection was conducted by the LGU's Task Force Langaw on September 12 that showed there was an unusual quantity of flies present in the said farms.

The "No Chick-in" is a strategy where no new chicks are introduced to a farm for a specific period to better monitor existing flocks, as well as to prevent diseases.

The LGU has sought for the said farms not to be named, but officials of Barangay Manguiao also conducted their own inspection at one of the farms on September 18 and got the same result as the September 12 inspection made by the task force.

According to the notice addressed by the mayor to the owner of one poultry farms, there was a swarm of flies in all of its three buildings.

In another poultry farm, the task force discovered the same unusual quantity of flies present in the facility.

According to the LGU, the excessive number of flies has caused concern among the residents in the area.

Dumdum has warned the poultry farm owners that failure to resolve the issue will mean the LGU will be forced to close and cease the operation of the farms.
