US EPA approves disinfectant against ASF
An "Intervention Farm Disinfectant-Cleaner Concentrate" by Canadian-based Virox Animal Health has been approved by the United States Environmental Protection Agency (US EPA) for use against African swine fever (ASF) virus, Farm Journal's Pork reported.
"This viral infection has caused devastation throughout Asia and Europe, and an outbreak in North America would have extreme consequences, both in terms of direct costs of depopulating herds, and long-term economic impacts from limitations to trade," Virox said in a release.
According to the company, rigorous cleaning and disinfection is critical against ASF. However, it should not be a trade-off between efficacy and safety to the user and environment. When used as directed, the product is non-toxic, non-irritating and readily biodegradable,
"As industry leaders in infection prevention, our goal is to ensure that our customers are protected against the threat of emerging disease outbreaks. The addition of the ASFv claim provides confidence that Intervention will be highly effective in the event of an outbreak in North America," Virox added.
