Hungary: Grain output up 6.1% to 7.2 million tonnes
Hungary's grain output increased 6.1% in 2014, amounting to 7.2 million tonnes, according to preliminary figures issued by the Central Statistics Office (KSH).
The growing area also rose by 3.1%. The high yield was partly due to excellent weather during the growing season in which all grain crops except rye did better than in 2013 when the overall yield was 6.9 million tonnes.
Wheat did particularly well, producing 5.2 million tonnes, up from last year's 5.14 million and rising 23% over the average of the previous five years. The growing area increased 2%.
The barley crop was up 10%. Oats were up 4% despite a 1.5% smaller growing area.
Triticale, a hybrid of wheat and rye grown as livestock feed, was up 6.3% on a growing area which increased 4.4%.
The rye yield was down 13% on an area of 33,000 hectares, 2,000 less than a year ago.
