Russia's meat, milk output down in August 2005

Russia's meat production in August 2005 fell 0.2 percent to register 500,000 tonnes in live weight, compared with the same period last year, the country's government said.

Cumulative meat production for January to August 2005 fell 1.8 percent to reach 3.5 million tonnes, compared with the same period the previous year.

While domestic poultry production had reportedly increased, lower production in the beef and pork sectors resulted in a fall in overall meat output.

In August this year, Russian milk output registered 3.3 million tonnes, a 3.7 percent fall compared with the same period the previous year.

Meanwhile, pig numbers in Russia fell 8.3 percent as of September 1 this year to register 14.8 million head, compared with the same period last year.

As of September 1, Russian cattle numbers fell 7.2 percent to register 23.3 million head, compared with the same period in 2004.
