South Korea implements stronger quarantine measures to combat African swine fever

In response to the recent outbreak of African swine fever (ASF) from wild boars, South Korea will enforce stricter quarantine measures during the upcoming Chuseok holiday period, according to the agriculture ministry, The Korea Times reported.

Since late last month, the country has reported at least seven ASF cases in wild boars in southern regions, sparking concerns about further spread. In total, South Korea has reported nine ASF cases from domestic farms this year.

To address the situation, the government will activate a 24-hour emergency system for rapid responses and enhanced countermeasures during the extended six-day Chuseok holiday, beginning on September 28, as announced by the Ministry of Agriculture, Food, and Rural Affairs.

Key measures include increased monitoring of local farms and a public awareness campaign to encourage compliance with antivirus measures, including the prohibition of feeding wild animals.

In addition, the government plans to conduct thorough disinfection of farms nationwide on September 27 and October 4 to prevent ASF transmission.

This year's Chuseok fall harvest holiday will span from September 28 to October 1. October 2 has been designated as a temporary holiday, followed by another public holiday on October 3, which marks National Foundation Day.
