Kenya's corn stocks will only last up to end of October
Kenya has 7.5 million (90 kilogramme) bags of corn, only enough to last the country up until the end of next month, Kenyan newspaper The Standard reports Friday (September 18), citing the assistant director at the Ministry of Agriculture.
"Because of this, the government will have to think hard on how to get more grains," Zacharia Mairura is quoted as saying during a workshop on food insecurity in Nairobi Thursday.
Participants in the roundtable talks, which were organized by the German Development Service, asked the government to speed up agricultural reforms, the paper reports.
The government has already extended a duty-free facility for corn imports up to January next year in a bid to deal with the country's food shortage.
