Cambodia exports first batch of aquaculture products to China

Cambodia has successfully shipped its first batch of aquaculture products directly to China, a significant step in bilateral cooperation between the two nations, The Phnom Penh Post reported.
On September 14, the initial shipment of Cambodian aquaculture products for China set sail from the Sihanoukville Autonomous Port. This milestone was made possible through the efforts of Kim Chou Co Ltd Import Export and International Transportation, becoming the first Cambodian company licensed for direct exports to China.
Heng Meng Ty, the head of the company's export division, conveyed that the inaugural shipment, consisting of frozen eels and freshwater shrimp totalling 10 tonnes, is bound for Shanghai, China. The expected arrival in Shanghai is slated for October 15 or 16.
Highlighting the sourcing process, Meng Ty explained that the products were procured from fishermen in various provinces around the Tonle Sap Lake, including Kampong Thom, Pursat, and Siem Reap. Stringent adherence to Chinese quality and hygiene standards was maintained throughout the entire export process, with direct inspections by Chinese specialists to ensure compliance.
This new avenue for exports is poised to significantly contribute to economic growth and generate additional employment opportunities for Cambodian farmers and fishermen.
In response to this achievement, agricultural ministry spokesperson Im Rachana expressed the ministry's congratulations and gratitude to Kim Chou Co Ltd for its diligence in meeting the export and phytosanitary standards stipulated by China's General Administration of Customs (GACC).
While celebrating this accomplishment, Rachana also underscored the need to maintain product quality to ensure the continuation of exports to China. The ministry plans to intensify efforts to promote the quality and safety of Cambodian fisheries products, aiming to expand demand among Chinese consumers.
As demand increases, exports of fisheries products are expected to surge, providing a boost to aquaculturists and fish farmers in Cambodia. This endeavour is viewed as a significant stride towards strengthening economic ties between Cambodia and China.
The authorisation for these exports to China was granted by the GACC in May, encompassing 11 types of products, including eels, snails, and freshwater shrimp.
