Malaysian State Perlis Free From Bird Flu, Cattle Disease

Malaysia's State Veterinary Department (JPH) on Monday said the state Perlis was free from bird flu and foot-and-mouth disease despite being located next to Thailand.

JPH Director Dr Johari Mingan said this could be due to strict monitoring and enforcement by veterinary authorities against cross-border smuggling of chicken and livestock.

JPH also advised the 20 poultry farmers in Perlis, who have sold off their broilers, not to take in new chicks for the moment as a precautionary measure, he told Bernama news agency.

Kelantan reported its first avian flu case last month while the foot-and-mouth disease recurred in the state's Pasir Puteh district last week.

Both diseases are believed to have been caused by the smuggling of poultry and cattle from Thailand.
