USDA revises down Romania's corn production estimate for 2024-25

The US Department of Agriculture (USDA) has further reduced its estimate for Romania's corn production in the 2024-25 marketing year, Romania-Insider reported.

This latest revision sees the figure drop by 900,000 tonnes, following an earlier 400,000-tonne reduction made in July. The adjustments are a result of the severe drought affecting the region.

Romania's corn production is now expected to reach 7.8 million tonnes, marking the lowest level in 11 years. For comparison, the country's best maize production performance over the past decade was recorded in 2018, with a harvest of 18.6 million tonnes. In contrast, Romanian farmers managed only 5.9 million tonnes in 2012, according to data from Economica.net.

In the previous year, 2023, Romania harvested 8.5 million tonnes of maize from a total area of 2,373,000 hectares.

On a broader scale, maize production across the entire European Union is forecasted at 59 million tonnes for the 2024-2025 marketing year. This represents a reduction of 1.5 million tonnes, or 2%, compared to the previous estimate. It is also 4% less than last year's production and 8% below the five-year average for the region.
