Philippines' pig prices mixed to declining in August as ASF burden lightens

In the week ending August 8, the situation with African swine fever (ASF) in the Philippines showed some signs of abating even as the number of provinces and barangays with active cases rose from six and 28, respectively, as reported on July 11 by the Department of Agriculture's Bureau of Animal Industry (DA-BAI), to 12 provinces and 51 barangays reported on August 7.
For that period, herd recovery and repopulation were beginning to improve compared to the same period in 2024, EFL AG-DATA notes. However, a downward pressure on prices was expected in the short term. This may be partially due to middlemen negotiating for lower prices with lingering ASF concerns in some areas.
Toward the end of August, prices were mostly on the decline, thanks to less enthusiastic consumer demand, potential oversupply, and logistical issues.
In the week ending August 8, live-weight hog prices in the Philippines ranged from around ₱140/kg (US$2.46/kg) to ₱170 /kg (US$2.99/kg) in the week ended August 8, showing a slight decline from the previous week.
