Indonesia lifts ban on Brazilian beef imports

Indonesia has lifted its five-year ban on imports of Brazilian beef after Indonesian inspectors cleared slaughterhouses in the South American country of food-and-mouth disease (FMD).

Indonesian livestock director-general Tjeppy Sudjana said five slaughterhouses in Brazil had been licensed to supply beef to Indonesia with no quota restriction.

Wellard Exports managing director Steve Meerwald said that Brazilian beef imports to Indonesia could potentially affect the live export industry in the long term.

He also noted that Brazilian boxed beef are extremely expensive for consumers, and would not help create increased competition for live cattle in the short term.

Meerwald added that Indonesia preferred to buy live cattle from Australia.
