Canada hard-pressed to find low cost feed ingredients

Canada's feed mills are having a hard time finding low cost feed ingredients and DDGS is the one variable that have helped to keep a lid on feed costs, according to the Animal Nutrition Association of Canada.

Compared to other feed ingredients, DDGS is very cheap and is abundant in supply, said Herb Schultz, manager of the association's Manitoba operations.

With DDGS, feed mills are able to reduce feed costs to livestock producers, who have seen their profitability going down due to high feed costs, a strong Canadian dollar and the US Mandatory Country-of-Origin Labelling (COOL), he said.

Schultz said unless specific ingredients are requested, the nutritionists in those feed mills will provide the lowest cost ingredient that will meet the nutritional requirements of livestock.
