Marfrig's Northern Ireland poultry plant banks US$28.70-million profit

Brazilian firm Marfrig, the owners of Northern Ireland's major poultry processor, Moy Park, recorded a profit of £18.3 million (US$28.70 million), just 12 months after making a £38 million (US$59.59 million) loss.

Moy Park was sold to the Brazilian conglomerate in 2008 for £450 million (US$705.67 million).

The company's financial report shows that despite the "challenging conditions" faced by the food industry, Marfrig increased its sales by almost six% from £737.7 million (US$1,157.06 million) to £780.6 million (US$ 1,224.34million) in 2009.

Moy Park employs 6,920 full and part time staff in Northern Ireland, England and France. In May, the company announced it was acquiring rival chicken processing firm, O'Kane Poultry.
