Finland's meat prices to soar at year end

The price of meat In Finland will go up at the end of 2010, and there is no other alternative to price increases in the present situation, according to Finnish food industry company HKScan's CEO Matti Perkonoja.

The meat chain has no other way of compensating the cost increases of the autumn of 2010. The EU decision that entered into force in May 2010 that prohibits the sale of frozen poultry as fresh has required the industry to introduce new operating methods.

The effects have been even more significant in imports. According to Perkonoja, imported meat that is sold as fresh in shops has practically disappeared from the market in Finland.
