Vietnam '09 pangasius exports seen to earn US$1.5 billion

Vietnam may earn US$1.5 billion from export of pangasius products in 2009, compared to US$1.45 billion last year, the Vietnam Seafood Exporters and Processors (VASEP) forecast.

The expected figure is US$1.1 billion to US$1.2 billion lower than previous forecast by the association.

VASEP said pangasius exports to EU in the fourth quarter this year will increase by 20 percent against the previous quarter as demand in the region has risen by 20 percent to 30 percent since early September.

Russia alone will import around 40,000 tonnes of pangasius fish, double the figure it imported in the third quarter.

VASEP also predicted that domestic firms will ship 450,000 tonnes of pangasius products abroad in the first nine months this year, raking in US$900 million, up US$170 million from late August.
