Mars and IDH partner to expand support for small-scale cattle ranchers in Brazil
Mars Incorporated, a US-based company, has partnered with IDH, a global foundation focused on transforming agricultural commodities markets, and other private sector entities to expand a programme supporting small-scale cattle ranchers in Brazil, Beef Magazine reported.
The initiative aims to promote good farming practices that contribute to regenerative agriculture.
Mars' Pet Nutrition business will invest EUR 600,000 (US$660,000) in the programme, building on an initial EUR 80,000 (US$88,000) investment from IDH. This funding is expected to extend the programme's reach to an additional 120 ranchers by the end of 2026. The initiative, known as the Sustainable Production of Calves Programme, has been running since 2019 and currently supports 700 small-scale cattle ranchers across three biomes in Mato Grosso and Pará states.
The programme seeks to improve the sustainability, resilience, and incomes of small-scale cattle operations. Ranchers receive training and technical assistance in various areas, including environmental regularisation, soil health, water management, pasture care, and animal welfare. Additionally, the programme offers support in accessing markets for their products. It also aims to reduce carbon emissions related to beef production and enhance cattle traceability, promoting deforestation-free supply chains.
Paul Gardner, Mars Pet Nutrition's chief procurement officer, stated, "As Mars continues to make progress in achieving our goal of net zero emissions by 2050, we are proud to be partnering with IDH to expand this important initiative. Mars Petcare is committed to sustainability and responsible sourcing, and we believe that supporting small-scale ranchers in Brazil as they adopt regenerative agriculture practices is an important step for the long-term health of the planet."
Manuela Maluf Santos, IDH Brazil's interim country manager, added, "We are excited to be working with Mars Petcare on this programme, which aligns with our shared goal of promoting sustainable and inclusive agro-commodities production in Brazil. Together, we believe that we can make a real difference in the lives of small-scale ranchers and the environment by transforming markets."
Field activities have already commenced and are expected to significantly impact the sustainability of small-scale cattle production in Brazil. In addition, the investment will help IDH and its partners reach their target of registering 1 million traceable animals by 2025 under the Protocol for the Sustainable Production of Calves.
