USDA expects drop in sow numbers in EU this year

Breeding swine stocks in the European Union continue to contract, with a decrease of 0.8% projected for the United States and Mexico expected to surpass Canada and South Korea.

According to the latest USDA estimates published on July 12, the breeding sow census in China in 2022 is expected to grow by 1.3% compared to 2021, reaching 40 million head.

Likewise, Mexico's sow inventory will grow by 2.4%, reaching 1.29 million heads, overtaking Canada and South Korea, whose breeding sow inventories will reach 1.24 and 1.02 million head, with 0.3% and 2.2% growth, respectively.

However, the USDA projected a decrease in the sow inventories in some of the world's leading producers such as the EU, which is expected to see a 3.2% decrease in its inventory at 10.9 million head.

Likewise, for the US, a contraction of 0.8% is estimated with 6.13 million head, while for Russia and Brazil, stocks of 3.46 and 2.98 million head are projected, with decreases of 1.1% and 1.0% compared to 2021, respectively.
