Impossible Foods expands new plant-based sausage to Hong Kong
Impossible Foods will begin selling its Impossible Sausage in Hong Kong, the first time the product has expanded outside the United States, Reuters reported.
Impossible Sausage is made from soy protein and is the company's second product after releasing its plant-based beef burger four years ago.
The plant-based sausage was launched in the United States in early-2020
Pat Brown, chief executive of Impossible Foods, said Asia is a key growth area for the company as it aims to capitalise on the region's high pork consumption.
In an online news briefing, Brown said consumers are leading the shift to plant-based foods especially in Asia where pork is the dominant meat product.
David Lee, chief financial officer of Impossible Foods, said Impossible Sausage will be sold at Starbucks Hong Kong cafes and restaurants, such as Triple O's from September.
Impossible Foods secured US$200 million in funding last month, bringing its total funds raised to US$1.5 billion since it was founded in 2011.
The launch of Impossible Sausage in Hong Kong comes over two years after Hong Kong's homegrown Omnipork launched in local supermarkets and restaurants.
Suppliers said there is increased demand for plant-based foods in Asia as concerns grow over COVID-19 links with wild animal meat, especially in China and Hong Kong.
Starbucks said there are plans to add more plant-based food and beverages to its menus in Asia.
