PETA urges Tyson to adopt new poultry stunning method

Animal rights organisation PETA is urging Tyson Foods to adopt controlled atmosphere killing (CAK) for the slaughtering of chickens and turkeys.

PETA, which owns stock in Tyson Foods, has submitted a shareholder resolution encouraging the company to improve poultry welfare by phasing in a less cruel method of poultry slaughter.

PETA said the CAK slowly replaces the oxygen that poultry breathe with inert, non-poisonous gasses such as argon and nitrogen, putting the birds "to sleep" quickly and painlessly. This method will not require live dumping, live shackling or live scalding of birds.
