Winter wheat sowing begins in Ukraine

Ukraine's Agriculture Ministry said farms in the country have begun sowing the first 5,170 hectares of winter wheat for the 2023 harvest, Reuters reported.

Ukraine's Agriculture Minister Mykola Solsky said last week that the area could decrease to 3.8 million hectares from 4.6 million a year earlier due to the Russian invasion.

The minister said the area planted with winter rapeseed in Ukraine for the 2023 harvest could decrease by 20% from the previous year.

According to the ministry, farmers had already sown winter rape on 686,000 hectares, and they had finished sowing in western Ukraine.

Compared to about 32.2 million tonnes in 2021, Ukraine harvested 19 million tonnes of wheat this year. The decline was caused by hostilities in numerous areas and Russia's occupation of sizable regions.
