Kenyan egg project aims to produce one million eggs per month
An egg production project in Kenya will help local farmers to produce one million eggs per month.
The effort, recently launched by Kirinyaga county governor Anne Waiguru, sees the participation of 32 community groups which will each rear 1,250 layers. It is targeted at boosting agricultural productivity and profitability in Kenya, with a specific focus on uplifting the livelihoods of women and youth. Farmers can expect to earn KSh1,000 (US$ 9.26) daily.
Kenya experienced a huge deficit in egg production and has to depend on imports from neighbouring countries. According to Waiguru, the country imports 10 million eggs a month.
Through the project, 40,000 chicks were delivered to community groups in March and have now matured into layers with about 100,000 eggs having been collected in one week. The layers are, however, expected to reach optimum laying capacity from September.
The eggs are then delivered to a cold storage facility in Kiaga for packaging and branding before being taken to the market. The storage facility handles around 3,500 trays of eggs at any given time.
There remains a huge demand for eggs and there is room for the project to expand, with 42 more groups having been incorporated for the second phase of the project.
The project seeks to achieve producing three million eggs, said Waiguru.
