Brazil's chicken industry expects two percent drop in 2006 exports

Brazil's chicken exporters expect to end the year shipping 2.4 million tonnes of chicken in 2006, 2 percent less than was exported in 2005, due to consumption declines following bird flu outbreaks in key markets worldwide, the Association of Chicken Producers and Exporters, or ABEF, said Tuesday (Sep 5).

Income is also expected to drop to US$2.86 billion compared to over US$3 billion last year, said Ricardo Goncalves, ABEF president.

Chicken exports rose suprisingly in August to 285,700 tonnes for whole birds and cutlets, compared to 195,100 tonnes in July, according to the Trade Ministry.

Goncalves said the industry was surprised by the government's August data and added that ABEF was in the process of collecting export data from member companies.

Brazil is the world's leading chicken exporter.
