Egg Orders Up In Thailand

Faced with an over-supply of eggs in Thailand, Hong Kong and South Africa have helped to solve the problem by placing orders for several million small-sized eggs.

Wichai Taechavattananan, president of Thailand's Association of Hen-Egg Farmers, Traders and Exporters, said yesterday the two countries want to import 6.5 million eggs a month during September and October.

Thailand's egg exports have dropped by 58 per cent to 36 million eggs for the first six months of 2004.

Egg production has dropped to 18 million eggs a day from 25 million in previous years. However, the eggs produced are mostly small in size, for which demand is much lower in Thailand.

Eggs at farms yesterday were being traded at Bt 2.2 each, down from Bt 2.3.
