Indonesia minister discusses with poultry breeders to increase chicken meat prices

Zulkifli Hasan, Indonesia's Trade Minister, met with representatives of chicken breeders from some associations and various poultry centres in Indonesia to discuss attempts to increase the price of chicken in the country, ANTARA News reported.

The farmers included members of the Joint National Chicken Farmers Organization (Gopan), the Indonesian People's Poultry Association (Pinsar), and breeders from West Java, Central Java, East Java, among other provinces.

The minister noted in a statement released here on Friday that the price of live chicken at the farmer level was currently between IDR 14,000 (~US$0.94; IDR 1000 = US$0.067) and IDR 17,000 (~US$1.14) per kg, less than half of the economic price of IDR 21,000 (~US$1.41) to IDR 23,000 (~US$1.54) per kg.

As production exceeds the demand, he concluded that the price variation was likely caused by the uneven distribution and supply-demand dynamics.

In the meantime, the national average retail price for broiler chicken is between IDR 33,000 (~US$2.21) and IDR 36,000 (~US$2.41) per kg.

Hasan determined that the reference price specified in Regulation of Trade Minister Number 7 of 2020 needed to be adjusted due to a price adjustment brought on by an increase in the cost of chicken feed and logistics.

The price increase of its constituents, such as soy bean meal, has an impact on feed prices (SBM). While it is currently beginning to fall in step with the price of wheat, the price of SBM is still generally high, he pointed out.

The minister also intended to meet with a number of related businesses to discuss efforts to raise the price of chicken.

Additionally, his team is working with the National Food Agency (Bapanas) to promote the use of the cold supply chain and distribute broiler chicken meat from regions with a production surplus to those with a production deficit.

As of August 30, 2022, the national price of broiler chicken at the retail level was reported to be IDR 35,000 (~US$2.35) per kg. This price was down 2.78% from the previous month's price of IDR 36,000 (~US$2.41) per kg and down 0.28% from the price in the previous week of IDR 35,100 (~US$2.35) per kg.
