Indonesia halts Chinese shrimp imports temporarily

Indonesia has stopped importing Chinese shrimps for now as the government evaluates if it should continue with shrimp imports, announced the country's Marine Affaires and Fisheries Ministry (MAFM) on Sept 5.

The EU had earlier complained that Indonesian shrimp exports are mere re-exports of imported shrimps from China.

MAFM minister Freddy Numberi said that the government, in making its decision, would take into account the EC's evaluation of the Indonesian shrimp industry. The inspection is taking place Sept 16-30.

Numberi also stated that the government is not placing an embargo on shrimp imports from China, and that the import halt is just a temporary measure during the inspection.
