Batangas, Philippines approves programme to boost corn production for poultry and egg producers

The Provincial Board of Batangas, Philippines, has given its approval to a measure aimed at enhancing the productivity of corn growers in the province, which is expected to significantly bolster the capacity of local farmers to provide essential feed to the poultry and egg production sector within the region, Philippine News Agency reported.
Mark Leviste, Vice Governor of Batangas, emphasised the significance of the Yellow Corn Enhancement Production Programme, noting that it will reduce the need for sourcing corn from other regions in the Philippines or importing it from foreign countries. Instead, the provincial government is committed to supporting local farmers and landowners in cultivating yellow corn across the province's extensive agricultural land.
The programme plays a pivotal role in securing a local market for the corn produced by farmers assisted by the Philippines' Department of Agriculture (DA). This corn will be designated for use as feed in poultry farms, thereby serving the high demand for chicken feeds in Batangas.
The DA's Corn Production Enhancement Project has a clear objective: to increase the yield per hectare of both yellow and white corn, ensuring a steady supply of corn for animal consumption.
Batangas farmers will receive corn seeds and inorganic fertilisers to facilitate the production of corn for poultry farm owners and egg raisers in the province. The key parties involved include the Department of Agriculture Region 4-A (DA-4A), Batangas Egg Producers Multi-Purpose Cooperative, Batangas Organic and Natural Farming Agriculture Cooperative, and San Jose Workers Multi-Purpose Cooperative.
Vice Governor Leviste highlighted the potential for this programme to not only boost the agricultural sector but also stimulate economic growth. By encouraging corn cultivation, the province will foster a self-sustaining cycle, as the produced corn will be purchased within the province. This cycle will also support the local poultry industry, as corn is a vital raw material for poultry feeds.
The Department of Agriculture Region 4-A expressed optimism about Batangas' corn production potential, especially since many sugarcane planters have transitioned to corn farming. A seminar held in various parts of Batangas has paved the way for increased corn production, according to Fidel Libao, the DA's regional technical director for Research, Regulations, and Integrated Laboratories Division in the region.
