Scottish farmers eligible for government funding to enhance cattle health

Farmers in Scotland are now eligible to receive government funding, aimed at enhancing the health and welfare of their cattle, Farming UK reported.

The initiative will provide financial support of up to GBP 1,250 (~US$1,577; GBP 1 = US$1.26) per farm over a two-year duration to facilitate the evaluation of a herd.

This funding programme is designed to encourage health and welfare assessments, and to enable farmers to consider interventions that can boost the performance of their livestock. Farms that fulfil specific criteria, including having an active Business Reference Number and registration with Rural Payments and Services online, and possessing a herd number, are eligible to undertake up to two interventions in each scheme year of the programme.

Under this scheme, each intervention will result in a standard payment of GBP 250 (~US$315). Additionally, upon the first claim, an extra GBP 250 (~US$315) will be provided to support personal development in this domain.

Furthermore, as part of the 2023-24 funding allocation, support will be offered to enhance the presence of Official Veterinarians (OVs) across Scotland. OVs perform critical statutory duties on behalf of Scottish Ministers, encompassing responsibilities such as tuberculin testing and investigations related to notifiable animal diseases.

Mairi Gougeon, Scotland's Rural Affairs Secretary, said that this animal health and welfare initiative is important, highlighting its role in rewarding farmers actively engaged in improving the well-being of their livestock.

Gougeon also acknowledged the pivotal role played by Official Veterinarians in maintaining the health and welfare of the national herd and noted the government's commitment to increasing their presence across the country.
